Update: Karen Severson Photo

Karen Severson will in all probability be released on parole in December of this year. The Avila family and friends are devastated by the news. "I wish that girl would die," declared Avila, 70, verging on tears after learning of the decision by state parole commissioners. "I feel bad for my sons. I feel bad for everybody who knew her.
"This was a terrible injustice, a terrible injustice. I don't understand why, people who commit murder, they let em out." (Daily News Los Angeles)

    1. I agree with Mad As Hell, we do need to judge others based on their actions. Let us not confuse judgement with condemnation. If we don't judge and walk around with blinders on then anyone can end up like poor sweet Missy. If we learn nothing from others experience we can end up the same way. Myself, I make it a point to learn, I don't just think things only happen to the other guy. I'm happy to see so many others here posting, and showing their concern. To those who say it's not our place to and blah, blah, blah,.I say we need to. Since this was a childhood friendship, this case is even more significant than other murders I've observed. That's why I'm especially moved by the whole scenario, now by MOVED,.I don't mean anything positive like inspired. I mean feeling what Missy felt, what the family feels, walking in their shoes.

    2. Hmm...let's see! Missy was killed 5 months before her 18th birthday. AHA! Maybe that was it, they had to get rid of her before she became of legal age, and be legal to go with one of the boyfriends or so he thought, and were afraid of.

  15. YOU SHOULD ALL READ THE BOOK MISSY'S MURDER, I READ IT LONG BEFORE THE MOVIE CAME OUT, I GREW UP IN LOS ANGELES AND THE BOOK TOUCHED ME SO MUCH THAT I ACTUALLY VISITED MICHELLE'S GRAVE SIGHT IN SAN FERNANDO A FEW TIMES. IT DID HAPPEN LIKE THAT, BUT YOU NEVER GET A FULL STORY FROM A MOVIE LIKE YOU DO FROM A BOOK. SAD, SAD, SAD STORY I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE BOOK. ESPECIALLY FOR TEENAGE GIRLS. GIRLS CAN BE SO JEALOUS & SO MEAN IT'S AWEFUL THE WAY WE TREAT EACH OTHER. KAREN WILL ROT IN THAT CELL & AFTER THAT SHE WILL ANSWER TO GOD!!! MAY GOD BLESS MICHELLE'S FAMILY...I WILL NEVER FORGET THIS STORY EVER. KAREN ACTUALLY LIVED WITH THE FAMILY FOR A WHILE AS SHE TRYED TO HELP SOLVE THIS MURDER, UCK JUST SICK. GOD BLESS YOU MICHELLE'S FAMILY, SHE WAS A BEAUTIFUL GIRL & IS NOW A BEAUTIFUL ANGEL.

  16. My husband grew up in Arleta. He knew Missy. He also knew Karen & Laura. He dated Laura for a while...I have no idea what he saw in her!! He said that Karen was a digusting, loud fat slob who used to drive around town in a an old, beat up green car. Her daughter hanging out the window. She used to bring her daughter to the park where everyone would meet up. Not the place to bring your young daughter...she was around alcohol & drugs!! He hated Karen!! He said she was actually mean to Missy all the time. He would ask Missy why she was friends with her...she said she felt sorry for her..they knew each other since they were little. He adored Missy!! He said she was the sweetest girl!! Always had a smile on her face and was a genuine sweet girl. Karen is a pig who lied to Missy's family for three years!! She let them go on to think the killer was a stranger all the while Missy's killer was right under their nose!! She should never be let out of prison!! And from what I hear, she still has no remorse!! What she did to Missy is unforgivable!!!!!

  20. What Karen and Laura did was definitely wrong, cold, and is hard to believe that friends can turn on you like they did on Missy but we are no better then them two. When you hate you have committed murder in your heart. Ok so you are not paying the consequences by being in a prison because you didn't act on that hatred but you are definitely living in your own prison allowing your hatred to consume you, rob you from your peace, and control your life. We are so quick to cast judgement on others but I bet if you had outsiders examine a detailed book of your life you are just as mean and evil. My heart goes out to Missy's family. It is hard to lose a loved one to another person's stupidity. We are better people when we learn to forgive and move on. Although it is hard when we go through tragedies like the one the Avila family went through but totally possible. I lost a loved one to the negligence of several people and you can say they pretty much killed this person and all they did for us was give us a large sum of money (as if that would take the pain away) They refused to take fault at what had happened and tried in every shape, way, and form to not have any part in the blame. We felt like justice was not being served and boy!! does God know how much I wanted these people to have a life in hell here on earth. But I learned that my anger and hatred was affecting and damaging me. So I forgave them. I moved on. Never forgetting my loved one. Everything that my family does, special events, get togethers, etc we always have this loved one present and at times it tends to make us tear but we def live free. We are consoled with the fact that life will take care of these people. So let's learn not to cast judgement. Trust me the same way you judge you will be judged and even worse. God bless you all. (by the way... Even murders can truly repent, it is not up to us to decide if their repentance is true or not.)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Karen you and Laura murdered Missy because you both hated her because everyone loved her and she was SO BEAUTIFUL.
Well now Missy is ETERNALLY BEAUTIFUL AND EVEN MORE LOVED which is why you both killed her in the first place, so you killed her for nothing while you and Laura rot in prison.
15 years is not enough and both of you should have got life in prison without parole.

  31. Nothing drives me more crazy than all of you that write all the stupid shit about how we need to forgive them and we have no right to judge-YES WE DO. If any of you have read the bible, you would know that killing is not ok. How would you all feel if it was your daughter??? I believe in god and I dont think for one second he would think bad of any of us for thinking that they are HORRIBLE,ROTTEN people,I am pretty sure he feels the same-thats why Hell exists. I think god forgives others who maybe Lie or make a mistake or accidently kill someone or many other small mistakes that we all make or even big ones sometimes, but seriously get real, they planned her murder because they are crazy nasty bitches, who obviously have no heart, they then watched as her family suffered and no remorse. I suppose all you people who think we have no right to judge believe its ok to molest and beat children and animals and other human beings. Yeah why dont we forgive them all,let them free, hey if its ok why dont we all be just like them. I have been so angry about this story and so many others for so long,I come upon this site and now I am even more irritated by all the crazy ones who honestly think we will be judged because we judged these 2 horrible people for doing something sooooooooooooooo MEAN. I just dont get why anyone would try to justify what they did or try to say that us NORMAL people are wrong for thinking that what Karen and Laura did was wrong. It was WRONG,oh my bad,I guess God is going to do horrible things to me now for not forgiving these to-oh well then, because I would never forgive them or not judge them.

People have sick meanings and think they will never get court what they are doing. The thing I fight will is Iam a christian and god say that we are fighting against demons but in real people do what they want to do.Its like satan dont have no power over people then he is allow to.If you allow him in your life then he will be in your life. What get me the most is I live like a human preson so why do these people get away with what they do.You can live right and your life be hell. And these people live like beast and they get the red carpet. They plan to kill her and they are on website trying to date. And this is just well then I should have the world. It crazy in this world how you read the word but you see the diffrent or the word.We are not to judge but they are being bless for living and doing wrong.I dont see eye to eye with this.I can be believe and try my best to live rigth and hell is all around me and people who dont care to no god they do the kill someone and give the life to god and blessing fall down ! And maybe Iam wrong for felling like this but it is the truth.A man can live his family for another woman and he will be marry again in no time. But the wife will go years with out another husband! And he will be bless! That is the world we live in today.Everything is turn around.

  43. God Bless Missy and her family; always. It is a tragedy, that makes me physically sick. We can all learn so much from the depictions, and I've used the movie to show my two daughters, what to watch out for. I guess you cannot trust anyone but God.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Karen is a sociopath and should remain in prison for her deliberate, malicious actions. However, I fail to understand why some of you bring her physique into account. It has no bearing on anything. There are plenty of thin people who kill too. She should be judged based on her actions, not on her appearance. She is actually a perfectly ordinary-looking person and a good example of how you can't tell a person's intents from their physical appearance.

  47. This is so sad!! That we are really the only species that so loathes one and other that we would chose to kill. I myself was hated, abused and nearly killed as a pretty, sweet young girl by the jealous girl around me.

I wonder if our society so conditions girls to put such a weight on looks, attention from boys that they are driven to these things? Were Karen and Laura born this way or are they a product of our screwed up values?

    ReplyDelete
  48. i saw the movie over and over. How could she live right under the same roof with the person she killed family. I also felt they should have received life without parole. The system really sucks. life in prison is only 25 years. IN really that person they killed is gone forever. It's just now right.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I've seen the movie over and over again, I just do not understand how anybody can take someones life over jealously. Karen and Laura are vicious people and will probably commit the same crime again if they are let out. Lets pray that they are in jail for the rest of their lifes. To Karen and Laura: You have no place in society in my opinion you should be placed in solitary confinement for your remainder of your life, you two do not deserve contact with general population, may you rot in hell you bitches

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think that many of you are ignorant to the fact that people can and do change once they have attempted to rehabilitate themselves, and like in Karen's case, find God. He alone has the ability to look into one's heart and change them into what He has meant for them to be all along. Karen started a ministry along with another lifer in prison, and has changed more lives than I can count. I know. I am one of them. I might not have murdered anyone, but I did do some things I am not proud of when I was in my addiction. She helped me to truly grow and become the person I am today, and once I left that prison and especially her ministry team, I have never been back to prison, and have been clean and sober for almost five years. I truly feel for the victim's family, and I can't imagine what they must have gone through. But they are carrying around so much unhealthy hatred in their hearts, and although it must seem impossible to forgive, if they could see the person that Karen has become, it might make it a little bit easier.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I have to add my two cents here, because there are two kinds of posters here that drive me nuts.

One actually only minimally irks me, but these are those that revert to using ad hominem attacks such as commenting on Seversen's physical appearance. I say this bothers me the least because I have a sister who gets so angry sometimes and although she is a very, very intelligent woman, words fail her when she's that upset, and then she can only say things like that. So I get you folks. But it behooves us all to stay away from that kind of remark.

The folks I don't get, and the ones that drive me MOST nuts are those saying we can't judge, and should forgive, etc. As another poster pointed out, yes we not only CAN judge others, but we MUST if we are to maintain a reasonably safe society.

The truth is that many violent offenders have played the "I'm born again Christian" card to get out of prison, only to reoffend. And sadly, the criminals most able to play that kind of game to the utmost efficiency are usually the most socio- or psycho- pathic and therefore the most dangerous of all.

So I don't give a hoot how someone acts while in prison if they committed murders that show shockingly cold-blooded lack of empathy. If they did that, they need to stay right where they are for the rest of their lives.

What makes me nuts is that more and more the evidence shows that people who will kill for such petty reasons, no matter their age, have serious biologically based deficiencies in ability to empathize with others and, therefore, must NEVER EVER be allowed to live among "normal" law-abiding innocent citizens again.

This "Christian" tendency to blast those of us who judge ignores REALITY. And just because you do not WANT to face reality doesn't make it unreal. This kind of denial is my biggest pet peeve any more. It has led to such hugely ignorant policies and stupid decisions on levels from the individual all the way to governments that it exposes one and all to dangers that should be blatantly obvious and avoidable.

How many people who meant well (and I do count these Christian posters among that bunch -- they mean well, but are in serious denial) have been at least used by criminals with no conscience, and at worst murdered by them? I can think of at least 2 murder cases off hand that are in that category, and dozens of fraud cases.

Yes, people who are able to reflect on their wrongs and empathize with others can change. But sociopaths and other kinds of dangerous personality disordered criminals do NOT have the ability to empathize and they believe, in their hearts, they are never wrong. Those people are so loathe to change themselves (because it gives the impression of being less than perfect, which in their minds they are) that the chances of someone who could commit such a murder making that change are vanishingly small, statistically.

I really want to live in a safer society, and that means that sociopaths with no empathy should be kept apart from the rest of us. Let them be born again Christian all they want -- but only behind bars.

Missy was a Awesome person and all who knew her loved her dearly!!! She was a lot of fun and so full of life. I saw her mother faint several times at the funeral, and too see any mother go through what she went through is unimaginable!!! I pray for Missy's mom and brothers with the up coming release of Karen. Scary as all being that she has a BA in physc and could be counseling someone's child or anyone. She got a free education and other stuff while Missy's life was cut short. Pretty sad our justice system in this world!!!

  55. I think anyone who takes a life should have to pay with their own life. I can't believe we house them in a prison, feed them, educate them and decide to send them back into society. It's not that she can't be rehabilitated but really do you want to take that chance with such an extreme crime? I don't.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think it was really sad what happened to Missy. I do beleive in forgiveness cause if we want God to forgive us for our sins then who are we to judge. I beleive they paid there debt and should be given a 2nd chance. This could be a sister mother or grandmom of yours.

They don't get a second chance at life or being with their loved one, I try not to know a inmates crime so I don't treat them different at work however they took a life so therfore they shouldnt get a second chance and should rot in prison, RIP Missy

I pray she gets hers!! Missy's family have my prayers always and she deserves sl much better than this for justice. She is with our Lord and will always be beautiful and happy

And to think, she was mad at her for something that was out if her control. Her beauty. Although Karen was released from jail, her soul is still gonna pay for what she has done. And who knows what she went through in prison. Never would she have been able to gr away with what she did. God bless all that were affected by this terrible crime.

When I saw her picture as a teenager, it was uncanny how much she resembled a girl I grew up with who was mean to me also and controlling. Never to the extinct of Karen. They all just seem to have the same look.

  67. I too watched the movie last night. And I have also seen it years ago. I still cannot believe that this girl got out of jail. It was clearly premeditated murder. The fact that she lived with the Avila family and deceived them for all those years should have warranted a life sentence. I also remember seeing this story on a show called Deadly Women. They left a good bit of the story out. But the main points get across. God Bless the Avila family.

  69. People who are obsessed with following Hollywood movies, believing them to be truth and responding to the point of revealing what's in their own messed up souls, have more deep rooted problems than the girls involved in this crime. Horrible, yes. Undeserving, yes. Sad, absolutely. What's more sad is us using Karen as a scapegoat for our own murderous tendencies. Next time one of us does something wrong, hateful, seemingly unforgiveable, may we pray no one judges us as we judged one girl's life. I knew all of the girls involved, and each one carries their own sorted past sins. Funny, everyone focuses on one...neglecting the others. Laura actually killed Missy, taking her breath, why so angry only at Karen? Eva started the whole thing, even fought Missy in the past...why not discuss her? We tend to go to the weakest link to vomit our inner feelings. Funny thing, when we point our finger at someone, three point back at ourselves. I hate what happened, but I know there is more to each girl's story. Ever think about what caused them to go this far? Mean, jealous...sure. But there is always a driving force, a root cause of our actions. I'm curious, aren't you?

    Someone who knew them.

You ain't got what it takes. See Missy didn't kill anybody. She was a sweet, loving, beautiful young lady. How are you gonna be like that? You can't!

I've taken heat for it myself, but I'm a romantic, and I can't change my focus. Whar's the rest of the male population excuse, I fail to understand.

  72. To the person who posted on March 11, 2011. Where do you get the idea that people who watch movies like A Killer Among Friends have those tendancies? Did it ever occur to you that people could watching them to know what to watch out for? That's why I do it. I'm not sitting in front of a screen experiencing a fantasy. I can't even bring myself to strike somebody let alone kill. We can't go through life thinking everyone we meet is ok. That's what got poor Missy killed. We don't live in a perfect world of all sunhine and roses, and no one out there has nothing but thoughts of good will. What keeps me alive is catching on to things developing before it gets serious. Alot of things are below the radar, but it's all about observing and what sounds right.

Contrary to your feelings or beliefs, even the 3 girls changed. What's scary, is Eva. Karen and Laura have had to face their truth and take responsibility. Eva has never. That's a loaded gun there.

one last thing I want to say...I asked Karen about the Cherie Good person...she said, and I quote, "I did fight her. If I could undo it I would. That girl had nothing like that coming. Cherie Good, I am sorry, and even more sorry that you still hold onto that." Karen told me the whole story, and if Ms. Good recalls, Missy was there as well, doing the loudest cheering for karen to kick her *ss. Come on people, you are all embracing something you truly don't know nothing about. Karen is an open book and will talk to anyone. You'd be surprised at who she is. Hollywood and hateful people turn a sad story into a place to spew venom. MIssy's story has turned into a gripe session. Again, we need to live our own lives.

    2. To the person who posted March 19, 2012. You posed a question, who was anyone 25 or more years ago. To answer that, and I speak for me only. Well, I never was a murderer, never will be. I have no skeletons in my closet that represents anything that I regret. I think before doing anything. That's your answer if you had my comments in mind. The key is to get through life with as little regrets as possible, and so far I've done one hell of a job doing so. It's not about being perfect, it's about using the head first. Anybody can do it. I'm not special or above all on earth.

It is my opinion that this "Anonymous" person IS Karen posting. FOR THE RECORD: Missy was NOT there cheering Karen on as she brutally beat me up, across the street from Polytechnic High School in early 1984. THAT IS A FILTHY LIE! Karen's baby daughter was strapped in a car seat, crying, while I was being beat up by a raging lunatic! If not for a neighbor coming out of their house, I believe the beating would have continued. "Fight" is not the word I would use to describe it. It was all one-sided and she out-weighed me by at least 50 lbs if not more.

It's been about 30 years, but it is still one of those bad things that happened to me that still haunts me. I have tried several times to leave it in the past, but I cannot forget since a year later she viciously murdered her "best friend". Forgive? Only on the principle that it is solely for MY well-being and PEACE of mind. Forget? I would like nothing but to not have that memory.

I will continue to support the Avila family in petitioning and helping to boycott Karen's book, but I will not allow one incident with a psychopathic killer consume my life. I am a life-long activist and will stay committed to the causes I strongly believe in.

  73. Just to further comment. My mom has had plenty of chances of being murdered in her lifetime. What I've picked up from her stories, what I learnt from my ex-police officer uncle, and watching true murder cases, I would say it would take alot, and I do mean ALOT to outstep me. That's why I believe if I could've been somehow associated with fhe Avila family, that never would've occurred. I pick up on things usually missed, not because I'm smarter and everyone else is stupid. Karen and Laura never would've gotten past my radar. All it would've taken is a small remark or a facial expression, something subtle, they would've had my attention for more clues from that point on.

  74. How's this for an idea? Another poster suggested lining their cells with Missy's pictures, how about adding the movie to that? Everyday, all day long they can watch A Killer Among Friends. I don't got any torment at all. Also a speaker could be placed in their cells so they can hear a girl doing like Missy was on that fateful day. Just to bring back some old memories for them. Just trying to be thoughtful.

  75. An additional word to Brenda. Even though I'm into pretty girls, and it seems unfair, but I'm also more defensive of them as well, especially when something bad happens or almost does. I'm probably almost as pissed off about that as her family is.

  77. Hey Laura. So you and Karen killed Missy over boyfruends. You do know how that usually goes, right? But you couldn't hurt the one you love, so you had to take it out on the one you hate. And you guys hated Missy way before there was any boyfriends. I know you did. If it's true, then that means your boyfriend cheated on you. But that was ok, right? I think the rest of the world see that a little different, what do you think? Have you ever heard of anyone else being cool with their lover cheating on them, I can't say I have. Why were you? See Laura, this is so twisted that it doesn't even compare with other like situations. You and Karen are both really weird specimens indeed. What planet did you two migrate from?

Of course we can pay lip service about forgiveness, but that's like saying it's ok what they did. How can it ever be ok? How can the two heartless things that killed her ever make ammends to the Avila family? They can't. There's no way. There was only one Missy. I can tell from her picture what kind of a girl she was. A picture is worth a thousand words.

  80. To anonymous of March 11, 2012. You say you knew all those girls, how well? Well enough to spot the warning signs or just an observer on the sidelines? Here's what sticks me right here, they took Missy to an old hang out, and if it's true, Karen denied ever having gone there, how is it that nobody knew whether or not they all did go there now and then? Was the rendevous kept so secret that Missy's family didn't even know? Didn't seem like anybody even knew what girls had planned that day. There's alot of loose ends with this situation. Missy turned around and said I Love You to her mom, was that premonition or did Missy know she wasn't coming back? Very eerie how that come up before she took off.

  81. Well, all I know is, there's more to this shit than meets the eye. Here we had two 18 year olds thinking an under legal age girl slept with their boyfriends. How old were their boyfriends anyway? If they were at least 18 themselves then it's hands off as far as Missy was concerned. An 18 yr old can't go with a 17 yr old, not even back then. I had that experience, that's how I know that.

To all saying we (as "bloggers or whatever the hell this is) are just as bad id someone had examined each and everyone of our lives we are just as bad, christian or not, that is one of the dumbest statements i have ever heard. Where i come from which is new york.... we dont kill over jealousy, men come and go but friends (in my book) are supposed to have your back. Cat fights are one thing but that makes no one a horrible person MURDER on the other hand makes you a filthy human being. Obviously this karen girl couldnt even get her baby daddy to love her because she was a trashy fat mess was too jealous she didnt know what to do. The prefrontal cortex doesnt stop deveoping until mid twenties but that does not justify stupid decisions as a teenager. Im sure these dumb girls really believed they could get away with this and never be caught (which is why they did it in the first place) this really makes me question who are my real friends and who arent, my heart goes out to missys family. This is tragic and ridiculous, even if it did happen even before i was born. This is real and people for the most part arent usually good but im a bitch and no one has killed me yet... lol to prey on a sweetheart is wrong and so, so dumb and shows nothing but these ugly (inside and out) girls insecurities. 89. I feel absolutely no remorse for Karen or Laura. What they did to Missy was cold and heartless, and for Karen to move in and live with Missy's family as they grieved while she acted as if she had nothing to do with it, is beyond sickening. Karen should still be in prison along with that scumbag Laura, but instead she gets to roam free and lives it up with the rest of our society. When their time comes, I hope they both rot in hell! 91. I still remember the first time I saw this movie when it premiered on KLAS TV-8 on a tuesday night after Rescue 911 20 years ago this November. Still to this date, what makes no sense is how the 2 killers were convicted of only second degree murder. The way that portrayed it, their act clearly was premeditated! Or was that just a typical US plea bargain to avoid the lethal injection they both deserved. If I had been Missy's parent, let's just say I'd have done alot more than slap her face if offered one last meeting in the police station before they booked them

  92. I remember the first time I saw this movie, 20 years ago this November. How much of a hard time I had not thinking about this story for a couple days after. Remember it well and have caught it on TV a number of times over the years, but having studied criminal justice for decades... what I don't get is how is it that Karen only got convicted of Murder 2? the way that was portrayed, and how the Cathy character's statement to the detective put it... it was all premeditated. Or was Second Degree murder part of some typical US Plea Bargain to avoid a trial in which both of those freaks would've been euthanized?

  94. They recapped the story on Unusual Suspects last night. I agree tha she should have never been released. By the Good Book, she should have been sent to God for Judgement, along with Doyle, immediately! She, in living with Missys mother for so long, playing the god guy,has only proven, that she could be faking the whole "good christian" act, as well. Missy befriended her, thinking she could trust her, since tey were little, only to be murdered out of simple jealousy. If she was truly sorry for what she has done, she should kill herself before she repeats this action. Parenting obviously played a role in this calculating, manipulative behaviour. So her demon seed, raised by her teacher(grandma) should be watched as well. This woman manipulated dozens of people into acts of violence. This is the devils seed

If I was Missys mom now that Karen is out of Jail I would sue the hell out of her for emotional and mental anguishing for living with her for 3 years deceiving and lying to her.. because that is pure evil and did cause great damage emotionally and psychologically for Missys mom. That would be my pound of flesh for the death of my daughter. I wouldn't care about money because there wouldn't be any but i could make Karen feel some of the discomfort she made Missys mom feel those years. I read somewhere, online, that Karen currently, frequently donates money, to the Missy Avila Foundation, in honor, of her at least, admitting, to very cruelly bullying Missy, while she was alive. I'm here to adamantly write, and adamantly confirm that's most definitely not nearly enough, at all, because firstly, people can't always be cheaply bought, with money, like they're just for sale, to forgive you, for your sins, and secondly, especially, regarding the case, of deliberate, very cruel, cold-blooded murder, if Karen really, truly cared about currently stopping cruel bullying, regarding all ado- lescents, and truly giving the Avila family, some true semblance, of godly comfort, godly, clear sanity, and godly strength, forever, and truly showing truly caring about any others, besides just herself, she'd finally, strongly admit to, and very truly apologize, for helping kill Missy, in fact, to very truly being the ringleader, in her murder, in 1985.
